Will Integrate Wisenut Into Looksmart Directory
Looksmart Acquires Wisenut Search Technology
Looksmart announced it will acquire the WiseNut search engine in a stock transaction valued at $9.25 million. By acquiring and integrating WiseNut, Looksmart will be able to offer both high quality scalable search technology and strong directory listings.

Looksmart does not index web sites automatically through software programs. Human editors ensure pages cataloged are appropriate and relevant. But Looksmart editors can't list everything on the web, which means that sometimes, on obscure searches, there might not be a match from the human-compiled database. In these cases, Looksmart provides matches that come from a search engine that “crawls” the entire web. This information is currently provided by Inktomi and listed below the directory listing in the section "Web Sites from Inktomi".

Wisenut is a next generation search engine that uses an algorithm similar to Google's PageRank to compute relevance, examining the web's link structure and popularity of pages to help determine the best results for your query.

By integrating WiseNut Looksmart will be able to offer a full service all-in-one solution that includes a scalable billion-document index infrastructure, next generation search relevance and strong directory listings.
