Pay per click search engine submission
The pay per click
search engines allow advertisers to bid against
others for keyword phrases related to their business. If you are
among the highest
bidders
your ad will appear in a top position on the search result page of the pay-per-click
search engines and in the sponsored link section of many major search
engines. The exact position of a sponsored link sections varies
from engine-to-engine. Sometimes they appear above or to
the
right of the unpaid editorial listings, other times they appear at the bottom.
Technically,
pay per click search engine listings or sponsored links are free and advertisers
only pay for clicks (visitors) they receive from the listings.
The pay per click search engines offer advertisers and web site owners a quick
way to generate targeted web site traffic. However, once you stop paying for
pay per click keyword phrases, your sponsored link will no longer show up. All
pay per click search engine traffic will disappear instantly.
The "editorial style" listing at the major search are free. However, they require
optimization of your web pages to appear in top-ranking positions. Although search
engine optimization requires an upfront investment and a long-term commitment,
it will eventually generate a sustained flow of relatively
low cost traffic for a fixed cost per month. It also provides a good fall back
position in case the expense of maintaining a pay per click search engine campaign
is too high. Here are some of the characteristics of search engine optimization
and pay per click search engine campaigns.
Pay per click search engine campaigns
- There is no upfront optimization cost, only copy writing fees for title and site descriptions.
- Paid listings are turned on immediately or within a few days.
- You have control over changes in ranking, title and site descriptions.
- Paid listings can be turned on and off immediately.
- Pay per click search engine campaigns require extensive monitoring to
control cost and determine ROI.
Search engine optimization
- Optimization of web pages for editorial search engine listings requires an up front investment to fund the initial optimization work.
- It takes about 2 to 4 months to get solid, top listings in most of the major
search engine.
There is a continuing maintenance cost required to maintain the achieved
positions in the search results since most search engines are constantly changing
the
algorithms they use to determine the relevancy of web pages and thereby the
ranking of of these pages in the search results.
You have no direct control over ranking due to the constant changes in search engine algorithms and competition for the top-spots.
- You have no control
over when updates to titles and descriptions take effect. Changes take at
least 7 to 8 days for pages that have been submitted through a paid inclusion
program (Yahoo/AllTheWeb/AltaVista, AskJeeves/Teoma).
Ideally, an aggressive search
engine marketing campaign should include search engine optimization, directory
submission and a pay per click search engine campaign at proven pay per click
search engines like Overture and/or Google Adwords. If your
web
site
is primarily business-to-business and you can't afford Overture and AdWords paid
listings it would probably benefit your business more to drop Google Adwords
and participate in Overture's paid listings because of their larger distribution
slightly higher conversion rates, and lower average costs per click. Google
Adwords listings are currently featured on Google, AOL Search, Ask Jeeves and
a range of other smaller search engines.
At a minimum you should invest in a search engine optimization program if you
cannot afford a pay per click search engine campaign at all. But be aware that
traffic from pay per click listings can account for up to 35 percent of overall
campaign traffic when running an integrated search engine marketing campaign
of both editorial and pay per click listings.
